Growing together in the Spirit of Jesus Christ...

"Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching." - Hebrews 10:25 NIV

"Resign every forbidden joy;
restrain every wish
that is not referred to God's will;
banish all eager desires, all anxiety;
desire only the will of God;
seek him alone and supremely,
and you will find peace."

glimpse of truth...

glimpse of truth

"The seeker after truth
should be humbler than the dust.
The world crushes the dust under its feet,
but the seeker after truth
should so humble himself
that even the dust could crush him.
Only then, and not till then,
will he have a glimpse of truth."

value and appreciation...

value and appreciation

This is a photo I took quite a few years ago
with an older point and shoot camera.
Back then I experimented with filters
for special effects.
A mild fresco filter was applied to this one
creating a “painterly” effect.

"Life's so ironic.
It takes sadness to know
what happiness is,
noise to appreciate silence
and absence to value presence."

- Author Unknown

this you will build your life by,
and this you will become."

too short...

too short

"I still find each day too short
for all the thoughts I want to think,
all the walks I want to take,
all the books I want to read
and all the friends I want to see."

- John Burroughs

And I will add...
for all the images I want to capture.

to see...

to see

"The apple cannot be
stuck back on the Tree of Knowledge;
once we begin to see,
we are doomed and challenged to seek
the strength to see more, not less."

our spirit...

My wife and I ate at a small
restaurant/cafe recently for lunch.

We had a corner table and above us
to the rear, in one corner,
this scene was resting on a platform.

When I go anywhere, I pay attention
to everything I see... I look
at images on the wall, people I see,
practically everything.
Call it an artist curse, but I
like to be sensitive to my surroundings.
And what I see, I see with my spirit...
that part of me that sees things
with my heart, my values, my beliefs.

This image brings to mind that our country
was built on the values of hard work,
simple lifestyle, integrity, and unity of purpose.

I pray those values will remain
in the hearts and minds of
all of us.

task of beauty...

task of beauty

"Hark! the hours are softly calling
Bidding Spring arise
To listen to the rain-drops falling
From the cloudy skies
To listen to Earth's weary voices
Louder every day
Bidding her no longer linger
On her charm'd way
But hasten to her task of beauty
Scarcely yet begun."

- Adelaide Anne Procter

"The day the Lord created hope
was probably the same day
he created Spring."

hot from the publisher

My second book has arrived and
I am pleased with the results.
It contains 30 images,
a sampling of my vision.

"Your vision will become clear
only when you look into your heart.
Who looks outside, dreams.
Who looks inside awakens."

old shed revisitied

The other week we re-visited this old shed.
The first photo was taken two years ago.
Pretty much looks the same.

you are through."

retired teacher friend breakfast

I participate in several group get-togethers,
centered around food and drink
(of course).
Not caring much for most
large group gatherings,
I prefer the conversation of small groups.

Develop friendships from a
variety of settings... work, church,
family, hobbies, etc.
You can never have too many friends.

"Friendship is like standing on wet cement.
The longer you stay, the harder it's to leave,
and you can never go without
leaving your footprints behind."

a bit down
(taken with iPad)

This photo was taken
on a very dismal rainy day.
Perhaps that is why these
brothers look a bit listless.

We too have a tendency,
from time to time,
to go through periods
of feeling a bit down.

"Have patience with all things,
but chiefly have patience with yourself.
Do not lose courage
in considering your own imperfections
but instantly set about remedying them
- every day begin the task anew.”

- Saint Francis de Sales

to risk

To hope is to risk pain.
To try is to risk failure,
but risk must be taken
because the greatest hazard in life
is to risk nothing."

time machine...

time machine

Have some music with your meal.
The diner tabletop jukebox
is not as common as it used to be.
Where you can find them,
some changes have taken place.
The price has gone up and
the music is now on CDs.
New songs have been added
although many old favorites
are still there.

"We all have our time machines.
Some take us back, they're called memories.
Some take us forward, they're called dreams."

- Jeremy Irons

a promise kept...

Later in the afternoon of the same day,
March 31, 2014...
see previous SonRays devotional...
the snow was gone and the croccus blooms
fully opened up.
Winter may not want to give up
but Spring isn't either.

"April is a promise that May is bound to keep."

last snow of the season?

photo taken on...
March 31, 2014

Perhaps this was the last snowfall
of the season?
I thought the one before this was.

"Nature has no mercy at all.
Nature says, 'I'm going to snow.
If you have on [shorts]
and no snowshoes, that's tough.
I am going to snow anyway.'"

- Maya Angelou

green old age...

green old age

I pray I will continue to be
useful to the Lord on this earth
right up till the moment I
pass on to be with Him.

"They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green..."

the matriarch...

the matriarch
taken with the iPad

This is the matriarch of our three cats.
Willow is approximately 16 years old...
still sound of mind, good eyesight,
decent hearing, but has a bit
of trouble chewing.

My nickname for Willow is Smudge...
see that dark spot beside her nose?

She can keep up with the boys,
Zembie and Kokomo, and helps
keep them on the straight and narrow.
Even when my wife and I cuddle up,
if Willow is in the room,
she keeps us on the straight and narrow too,
by jumping up on our laps and pushing
her face into ours.

"With the qualities of cleanliness,
affection, patience, dignity,
and courage that cats have,
how many of us, I ask you,
would be capable of becoming cats?"

clearly see...

Founder's Hall

An early Spring shot of Founder's Hall
in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
During the summer, with the leaves
on the trees, you would not have
such a clear view of the building.

Sometimes it takes harsh, stark reality
in order to clearly see from where
our strength comes.

chilly picnic

My wife, daughter, and I
took a walk at a park recently in March.
We had a simple picnic and enjoyed
the approach of Spring and the lack of snow.

Schedule quality time with your family
and loved ones as much as you can.
Praise God for all He has given you.

Enjoy His blessings.

true work of art...

true work of art

My daughter and I went to an art exhibit
a couple of weeks ago.
Art is different things to different people.
Good art should convey a sense of spirit,
so that we, as viewers, will see that spirit
and a bit of the artist too.

"The true work of art is but a shadow
of the divine perfection."

my harbinger of Spring

I look for this flower to bloom each year.
It grows in our yard and I think each
year someone will step on it.
It is all alone and is very small,
even compared to other croccus.
It bloomed on March 21st this year.

Here at the Doyle homestead,
it was officially Spring.

finally Spring?

Is it finally Spring?

"It's spring! Farewell
To chills and colds!
The blushing, girlish
World unfolds

Each flower, leaf
And blade of sod—
Small letters sent
To her from God."

- John Updike

decisions, decisions...

decisions, decisions

Sometimes it is just hard to choose...
do I want eggs, pancakes, or something else?
How about both with a side of bacon and coffee?

"Good decisions come from experience,
and experience comes from bad decisions."
