Growing together in the Spirit of Jesus Christ...

"Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching." - Hebrews 10:25 NIV

October 31, 2011 (whatever you possess)

whatever you possess

“Remember to be gentle with yourself and others...
none can say why some fields will blossom
while others lay brown beneath the August sun.
Care for those around you.
Look past your differences.
Their dreams are no less than yours,
their choices no more easily made.
And give, give in any way you can,
of whatever you possess.
To give is to love.
To withhold is to wither.
Care less for your harvest
than for how it is shared
and your life will have meaning
and your heart will have peace.”
- Kent Nerburn

October 30, 2011 (a gem within a treasure)

a gem within a treasure

I enjoy looking at photographs
using a cropping tool... my own
as well as others, even those taken
by the masters of photography.
The practice helps you with your own
creative pursuits and it is fun
to find a gem within a treasure...
a photo within a photo.

This particular photo above
was cropped from another of my photos
recently taken... the original
is (in my opinion) worthy
in its own right... for me...
a treasure.

This cropped and re-worked
photo is, I believe,
a gem within the treasure.

All of us, separately, are gems
to the Lord... a part
of His bride... the Church...
his treasured possession.

October 27, 2011 (beyond our reach)

beyond our reach

"We live but once.
The years of childhood, when once past,
are past forever...it has gone beyond our reach.
What we have made it, it shall remain.
There is no power in Heaven
or on earth that can change it.
The record of our past stands forth
in bold and ineffaceable characters,
open to the all-seeing eye of God.
There it stands and one day
we shall give an account of it.
The present moment alone is ours...
Today is a day which we never had before,
which we shall never have again.
It rose from the great ocean of eternity,
and again sinks into its unfathomable depths."

true contentment

“'You come of the Lord Adam
and the Lady Eve,' said Aslan.
'And that is both honor enough
to erect the head of the poorest beggar,
and shame enough to bow the shoulders
of the greatest emperor on earth.
Be content.'”
- C. S. Lewis

“True contentment depends not upon what we have;
a tub was large enough for Diogenes,
but a world was too little for Alexander.”
- Charles Caleb Colton

The second manifestation

The first is named Nature,
the second is named Art."

October 22, 2011 (memory redemption)

memory redemption

“God does not want to remove your memories;
he wants to redeem them.
He wants to transform them into something good,
something that will make you more like Jesus.
Do you see the hope this offers Christians?
Your bad memories of your past sins
- even the worst ones -
can be opportunities for life-changing growth.
You do not need to avoid, run from,
cover over, or get rid of your past.
You can reinterpret it God's way.
God's goal is neither
memory erasure nor memory denial,
but memory redemption.”
- Robert D. Jones

“When you leave this world,
will you be known as one

Or will you be recognized as one

coarse wool

“Do not judge from mere appearances;
for the lift laughter that bubbles on the lip
often mantles over the depths of sadness,
and the serious look may be the sober veil
that covers a divine peace and joy.
The bosom can ache beneath diamond brooches;
and many a blithe heart dances under coarse wool.”

rust not gold

“As the tree is fertilized
by its own broken branches and fallen leaves,
and grows out of its own decay,
so men and nations are bettered

and refined out of broken hopes

- Frederick W. Robertson
It is the rust we value, not the gold.”

October 17, 2011 (Boots)

Boots

Boots is my new neighbor's cat.
I watched him the other day as he
stalked a chipmunk.
To be very honest,
I was silently cheering him on...
the chipmunks can be somewhat
of a nuisance or worse
(cute as they may be).

I was very impressed with
Boots concentration as nothing
seemed to deter his self-assigned
(or God directed) mission.

We too, should not allow
the distractions of this world
to deter us from growing
in the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
our Lord.
We must remain ever mindful of Him.

“I know your deeds,
that you are neither cold nor hot.
I wish you were either one or the other!”
- Revelation 3:15 NIV

October 10, 2011 (the beauty within)

the beauty within

It does not matter
how many faults you have,
for we are all imperfect.
What matters is God's abundant grace
and His love for us.
If we accept His love,
that love will abide within us
and will show forth to others.

“Since love grows within you, so beauty grows.
For love is the beauty of the soul.”
- Saint Augustine

October 08, 2011 (growing conditions)

growing conditions

With the properly needed light, water,
air, nutrients, and support...
plants can thrive (and bloom)
just about anywhere.

We too can grow and bloom
provided we have the light of our Savior,
His breath of life, His living water, the nutrition
of His Holy Word, and the support
of other Christians.

But most of all... growth
(botanical and spiritual) depends
on the Creator's grace and love.

“So then, just as you received
Christ Jesus as Lord,
continue to live in him,
rooted and built up in him,
strengthened in the faith as you were taught,
and overflowing with thankfulness.”
- Colossians 2:6,7 NIV

October 07, 2011 (His love for us)

His love for us

I pray every day to grow to love our God
with all my heart, and mind, soul, and spirit,
in all my strength.

But it must be remembered
that it is not our love for God,
but it is because of “His love for us”,
that He sent His Son to be the way
to take away our sins (1 John 4:10).

October 05, 2011 (reference point)

reference point

“In space, astronauts experience the misery
of having no reference point,
no force that draws them to the center.
Where there is no "moral gravity" –
that is, no force that draws us to the center –
there is spiritual weightlessness.
We float on feelings that will carry us
where we were never meant to go;
we bubble with emotional experiences
that we often take for spiritual ones;
and we are puffed up with pride.
Instead of seriousness, there is foolishness.
Instead of gravity, flippancy.
Sentimentality takes the place of theology.
Our reference point will never serve
to keep our feet on solid rock.
Our reference point,
until we answer God's call,
is merely ourselves.
We cannot possibly tell which end is up.”
- Elizabeth Elliot

“Once we roared like lions for liberty;

October 01, 2011 (lighten the darkness)

lighten the darkness

“O let us never forget;
that the wonderful things
contained in the divine law
can neither be discovered
nor relished by the 'natural man,'
whose powers of perception and enjoyment
are limited in their range
to the objects of time and sense.
It is the divine Spirit alone
who can lighten the darkness of our sinful state,
and who can enable us to perceive the glory,
the harmony, and moral loveliness
which everywhere shine forth
in the pages of revealed truth.”
- John Morison
