Growing together in the Spirit of Jesus Christ...

"Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching." - Hebrews 10:25 NIV

to blush unseen

“Genuine faith must go beyond
the mere intellectual assent concerning biblical doctrines.
People must let the implications of these doctrines
radically affect their hearts so that
they respond positively to God
with the obedience and works of faith.”
- Daniel Fuller

“Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.”
- Thomas Gray

He is marching on

“In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.”

May 29, 2011 (medicinal properties)

Ground-ivy or Creeping Charlie

This “weed” (from the mint family)
is said to have several medicinal properties
although, like many of today’s drugs,
may have quite a few
unpleasant/dangerous side effects.

You may want to try the Lord’s prescription…
(most likely will have side effects
of additional blessings).

“Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.”
- Proverbs 3:7,8 NIV

May 28, 2011 (in the gray morning)

in the gray morning

“The supreme test of goodness is not in the greater
but in the smaller incidents of our character and practice;
not what we are when standing in the searchlight of public scrutiny,
but when we reach the firelight flicker of our homes;
not what we are when some clarion-call rings through the air,
summoning us to fight for life and liberty,
but our attitude when we are called to sentry-duty in the gray morning,
when the watch-fire is burning low.
It is impossible to be our best at the supreme moment
if character is corroded and eaten into by daily inconsistency,
unfaithfulness, and besetting sin.”
- F.B. Meyer

May 27, 2011 (share the glory)

share the glory

“God has ordained that the eye-opening work of His Spirit
always be combined with the mind-informing work of His Word.
His aim is that we see the glory of His Son (and be changed).
So He opens our eyes when we are looking at the Son –
and not at soaps or sales.
The work of the Spirit and the work of the Word
always go together in God’s way of true spiritual self-revelation.
The Spirit’s work is to show the glory and beauty
and value of what the mind sees in the Word.”
- John Piper

“God must open the eyes of our understanding
before we can truly know and rightly interpret His truth.
His truth is available only to those
with a regenerate spirit and in whom His Spirit dwells,
for only the Spirit can illumine Scripture.
Just as the physically blind cannot see the sun,
the spiritually blind cannot see the Son.
Both lack proper illumination.
- John MacArthur

“That book in many’s eyes doth share the glory
That in gold clasps locks in the golden story.”
- William Shakespeare

May 26, 2011 (Let the SON shine in.)

Let the SON shine in.

Do you have your curtains drawn?

Open the window to your heart
and let the Son shine in.

Welcome Him as you would your true love,
and invite Him to stay with you forever.

Your life will never be the same.

“In Christ we have a love that can never be fathomed;
a life that can never die;
a righteousness that can never be tarnished;
a peace that can never be understood;
a rest that can never be disturbed;
a joy that can never be diminished;
a hope that can never be disappointed;
a glory that can never be clouded;
a light that can never be darkened;
a happiness that can never be interrupted;
a strength that can never be enfeebled;
a purity that can never be defiled;
a beauty that can never be marred;
a wisdom that can never be baffled;
and resources that can never be exhausted.”

May 25, 2011 (the glow that illumines)

The light of the Spirit illumines…
quite unlike the harsh, glaring light of the world
that obscures the truth.

"There are two kinds of light -
the glow that illumines,
and the glare that obscures."
- James Thurber

May 24, 2011 (flowers from a friend)

flowers from a friend

“Today friendship has fallen on hard times.
Few men have good friends, much less deep friendships.
Individualism, autonomy, privatization,
and isolation are culturally cachet,
but deep, devoted, vulnerable friendship is not.
This is a great tragedy for self, family, and the Church,
because it is in relationships that we develop
into what God wants us to be…
Friendships…are there to be made
if we value them as we ought –
and if we practice some simple disciplines of friendship.”
- Kent Hughes

May 23, 2011 (from every bloom)

from every bloom

“A thankful heart is one of
the primary identifying characteristics of a believer.
It stands in stark contrast to pride,
selfishness, and worry.
And it helps fortify the believer’s trust in the Lord
and reliance of His provision,
even in the toughest times.
No matter how choppy the seas become,
a believer’s heart is buoyed by
constant praise and gratefulness to the Lord.”
- John MacArthur

“Praise is the honey of life
which a devout heart extracts from
every bloom of providence and grace.”
- C.H. Spurgeon

hanging onto commitment

“There's a difference between interest and commitment.
When you're interested in doing something,
you do it only when circumstance permit.
When you're committed to something,
you accept no excuses, only results.”
- Author Unknown

“Our need is not to prove God’s faithfulness
but to demonstrate our own,
by trusting Him both to determine
and to supply our needs according to His will.”
- John MacArthur

“There are people who think seeing obstacles
is a sign of maturity and insight.
But anyone of average intelligence can do that.
God wants people who see a way beyond the obstacles
and who encourage others to take it.”

May 20, 2011 (busy as a bee)

busy as a bee

It is good to work hard.
Extreme busyness…
leaving no time for God however,
stunts your spiritual growth.

“The weight of so many
responsibilities and distractions
- even the worthwhile ones -
has a crushing effect
on a person's relationship with Christ.
It ruins our taste for spiritual things.
It suppresses our exuberance for spiritual service.
It suffocates our passion for pursuing Christ
and the intimate relationship He offers.
It all grinds away at our soul.
Eventually, following Jesus starts to lose its luster.
The blessings and joys of walking with Him
are crowded out by myriad tiny details of life.”
- John MacArthur

May 19, 2011 (growing through conflict)

growing through conflict

At times we find ourselves
walking down a tight, narrow
and debris filled path.

Our thoughts are dark
and we are without joy.
Everything appears hopeless
and useless.

We look into the mirror of our souls
and we do not like what we see.

Depression and/or anger may follow.

I have been there.

In these moments, it is imperative
that we turn to God and prayer…
and focus on where we have been,
where we are eventually going to be,
and count our many blessings.

Those around us do not
deserve to be brought down
with us.

Brightness through the opened gate
of God’s love and mercy is just ahead.
He will catch us as we stumble and fall,
if we will allow Him, and He will
guide us back into His peace and joy.

“Though many conflicts
can be upsetting and difficult,
see if it is possible
to regard such interactions with others
in a positive, even optimistic way…
Conflicts can become invitations
for you to grow in a transformed humanness
and overcome the destructive habits
of mind, speech and behavior.”
- Michael Lawson

“As you worry less
about going through conflict
and focus more on growing through conflict,
you will enhance that process
and experience the incomparable blessing
of being conformed to the likeness of Christ.”
- Ken Sande

May 18, 2011 (properly appreciate)

properly appreciate

“There were ten lepers healed,
and only one turned back to give thanks,
but it is to be noticed that our Lord
did not recall the gift from the other nine
because of their lack of gratitude.
When we begin to lessen our acts
of kindness and helpfulness
because we think those who receive
do not properly appreciate
what is done for them,
it is time to question our own motives.”
– Leaves of Gold

May 17, 2011 (resplendent radiance)

resplendent radiance

“What is “glory”?...
Glory is the beauty of God unveiled!
Glory is the resplendent radiance
of His power and His personality.
Glory is all of God that makes God, God,
and shows Him to be worthy
of our praise and our boasting
and our trust and our hope
and our confidence and our joy!
Glory is the external elegance
of the internal excellencies of God.
Glory is what you see
and experience and feel
when God goes public with His beauty!”
- Sam Storms

at thy right hand [there are]
pleasures for evermore.”

May 14, 2011 (who you kiss)

Be careful of who you kiss.

“According to the Bible,
the marriage act is more than a physical act.
It is an act of sharing.
It is an act of communion.
It is an act of total self-giving
wherein the husband
gives himself completely to the wife,
and the wife gives
herself to the husband in such a way
that the two actually become one flesh.”
- Wayne Mack

lily of the valley

“I am only a little rose
or autumn crocus of the plain of Sharon,
or a [humble] lily of the valleys
[that grows in deep and difficult places].”
- Song of Solomon 2:1 AMP

“Youth is the time when all seems to be
within the grasp of the careful student.
I have left that time behind.
‘I don’t know’ is on my lips more often now.
But so also is ‘God knows!’ –
not as a thoughtless expression in conversation,
but as the conviction of my heart.”
- Tom Wells

May 12, 2011 (see clearly)

see clearly

“Every Christian who struggles with depression
struggles to keep their hope clear.
There is nothing wrong
with the object of their hope –
Jesus Christ is not defective
in any way whatsoever.
But the view from the struggling Christian's heart
of their objective hope could be
obscured by disease and pain,
the pressures of life,
and by Satanic fiery darts shot against them…
All discouragement and depression
is related to the obscuring of our hope,
and we need to get those clouds
out of the way and fight like crazy
to see clearly how precious Christ is.”
- John Piper

May 11, 2011 (I can see)

I can see

“I can see,
and that is why I can be happy,
in what you call the dark,
but which to me is golden.
I can see a God-made world,
not a manmade world.
- Helen Keller

“Death is no more than passing
from one room into another.
But there's a difference for me,
you know.
Because in that other room
I shall be able to see.”
- Helen Keller

”It is a terrible thing to see
and have no vision.”
- Helen Keller

May 10, 2011 (innocence)

“Know you what it is to be a child?
It is to be something very different
from the man of to-day.
It is to have a spirit
yet streaming from the waters of baptism;
it is to believe in love,
to believe in loveliness,
to believe in belief;
it is to be so little that the elves
can reach to whisper in your ear;
it is to turn pumpkins into coaches,
and mice into horses,
lowness into loftiness,
and nothing into everything,
for each child has
its fairy godmother in its own soul.”
- Francis Thompson

May 09, 2011 (listen)

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
- 1 Samuel 3:9 NIV

The Lord speaks to us through:
1. His Word… the Bible
2. His Holy Spirit
3. Other believers
4. Our situation

We must listen…
quietly, expectantly, actively, confidently,
submissively, reverently, and gratefully.

We must act…

May 08, 2011 (a mother's love)

A mother’s love

“In a world of make believe
You can change all that you see
But in the world of reality
You've taught me all that I need

Time like a river flows
Twisting and turning all the way
Life is an endless road
You've been with me day by day

The only way I can thank you
Is to be the best that I can be
If we hold on together
Just you and me

A mother's love is forever
A mother's love is for free
It doesn't matter if you're good or bad
She's there for whatever you need”

it rushes on

Hast thou given the horse strength?
hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
- Job 39:19 KJV

“Ah, steeds, steeds, what steeds!
Has the whirlwind a home in your manes?
Is there a sensitive ear, alert as a flame, in your every fiber?
Hearing the familiar song from above,
all in one accord you strain your bronze chests and,
hooves barely touching the ground,
turn into straight lines cleaving the air,
and all inspired by God it rushes on!”
- Nikolai V. Gogol

“Measure the time

Let the time of your sleep

- Richard Baxter

- Augustine

heat of comfort

“The reason why many poor souls
have so little heat of joy in their hearts
is that they have so little light
of Gospel knowledge in their mind.
The further a soul stands from the light of truth,
the further he must be from the heat of comfort.”
- William Gurnall

May 04, 2011 (delightful manifestation)

delightful manifestation

“In our redemption by Christ
we have the fullest, clearest,
and most delightful manifestation
of the glory of God
that ever was or shall be in this life.
All the declarations and manifestations
that we have of His glory
in the works of creation and common providence,
are but dim and obscure
in comparison with what is here.
Indeed the glory of His wisdom,
power, and goodness,
is clearly manifested in the works of creation.
But the glory of His mercy and love
had lain under an eternal eclipse
without a Redeemer.”
– Thomas Boston

May 03, 2011 (kindness and goodness)

kindness and goodness

“Kindness is a sincere desire for the happiness of others;
goodness is the activity calculated to advance that happiness.
Kindness is the inner disposition,
created by the Holy Spirit,
that causes us to be sensitive to the needs of others,
whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.
Goodness is kindness in action – words and deeds.
Because of this close relationship,
we often use the two words interchangeably.”
- Jerry Bridges

such words as improvement,
achievement, and success
have no meaning.”

May 01, 2011 (seeking faith?)

seeking faith?
Photo by: Dolores Myers
Executive Director of Boehm's Chapel

“Some of you seek for faith
much in the same way
as you would dig for a well.
You turn the eye inward upon yourself
and search amidst the depths
of your polluted heart
to find if faith is there;
you search amid all your feelings
at sermons and sacraments
to see if faith is there;
and still you find nothing
but sin and disappointment…
Look full in the face of Jesus…
Drink in His Word…
Faith comes by hearing the voice of Jesus.”
- Robert Murray McCheyne

“We must never think of salvation
as a kind of transaction between God and us
in which He contributes grace
and we contribute faith.
For we were dead and had to be quickened
before we could believe.
No, Christ's apostles clearly teach elsewhere
that saving faith too is God's gracious gift.”
- John Stott
