“Always see God and His glory
in everything we do, say, and undertake;
that the end we should seek
is to be the most perfect adorers
of God in this life,
as we hope to be through all eternity;
take a firm resolution to overcome,
with God’s grace, all the difficulties
which are met in the spiritual life.”
- Brother Lawrence
of the Resurrection

(Spiritual Maxims)

“As the deer pants for the water,
So my soul longs after You.
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You.

You're my Friend and You are my Brother,
Even though You are a King.
I love You more than any other,
So much more than anything.”

personal relationship
(at Sandy Cove)

“There are many things
which a person can do alone,
but being a Christian is not one of them.
As the Christian life is, above all things,
a state of union with Christ,
and of union of his followers with one another,
love of the brethren is inseparable
from love of God.
Resentment toward any human being
cannot exist in the same heart with love to God.
The personal relationship to Christ
can only be realized when one has
‘come to himself’ as a member of His Body,
the Christian fellowship.”
- William T. Ham

“Those who live in the Lord
never see each other the last time.”

“Never let go of hope.
One day you will see
that it all has finally come together.
What you have always wished for
has finally come to be.
You will look back
and laugh at what has passed
and you will ask yourself...
'How did I get through all of that?’”
- Author Unknown

“One day at a time - this is enough.
Do not look back
and grieve over the past for it is gone;
and do not be troubled about the future,
for it has not yet come.
Live in the present,
and make it so beautiful
it will be worth remembering.”
- Author Unknown

“Looking back you realize
that a very special person
passed briefly through your life -
and it was you.
It is not too late to find that person again.”

June 27, 2010 (having conviction)

taken at Sandy Cove
(during a personal retreat)

Having conviction is good as long as
it is a Christ directed conviction.
The danger is in developing and following
our own personal conviction.
We are “followers” of Christ.
Our goal is not to sail ahead of Him
with our own destination,
and then ask for His blessing,
but to seek His guidance
and do His will not ours.

“Seek the clasp of Christ's hand
before every bit of work, every hard task,
every battle, every good deed.
Bend your head
in the dewy freshness of every morning,
ere you go forth
to meet the day's duties and perils,
and wait for the benediction of Christ,
as He lays His hands upon you.
They are hands of blessing.
Their touch will inspire you
for courage, and strength,
and all beautiful and noble living.”
- J. R. Miller

Grant unto us, Almighty God,
in all time of sore distress,
the comfort of the forgiveness of our sins.
In time of darkness give us blessed hope,
in time of sickness of body give us quiet courage;
and when the heart is bowed down,
and the soul is very heavy,
and life is a burden, and pleasure a weariness,
and the sun is too bright, and life too mirthful,
then may that Spirit, the Spirit of the Comforter,
come upon us,
and after our darkness may there be
the clear shining of the heavenly light;
that so, being uplifted again by Thy mercy,
we may pass on through this our mortal life
with quiet courage, patient hope, and unshaken trust,
hoping through Thy loving-kindness and tender mercy
to be delivered from death
into the large life of the eternal years.
Hear us of Thy mercy,
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

meeting together

“The reason I encourage Christians
to find a good church is because
the Bible instructs us
to be in relationship with other believers.
If we are part of Christ's body,
we will recognize our need
to fit into the body of believers.
The church is the place where
we come together to encourage one another
as members of Christ's body.
Together we fulfill
an important purpose on the earth.
It is actually for our own good
that God want us in fellowship
with other believers.
We need each other
to grow up in the faith,
to learn to serve, to love one another,
and to practice forgiveness.
Though we are individuals,
we still belong to one another.”
- Mary Fairchild

“Let us not give up meeting together,
as some are in the habit of doing,
but let us encourage one another —
and all the more as you see
the Day approaching.”

laud and magnify
(VBS 2010)

“Praise the Lord, for He is glorious;
Never shall His promise fail.
God hath made His saints victorious;
Sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation;
Hosts on high, His power proclaim.
Heaven and earth and all creation,
Laud and magnify His Name.”

gift of awareness

“How do we keep in the forefront of our minds
the simple fact that we live
in an indescribably wonderful world?
It’s not easy.
Routine dulls the eye and ear.
Repetition and familiarity fog the capacity
for astonishment.
Even so, moments come to all of us
when everything seems fresh
and new and marvelous.
This gift of awareness makes possible
some of our happiest hours.
We need to be receptive to it
and grateful for it.”

looking back

“All fathers would, I hope,
look back on Father’s Day
and reflect on what they have done.
If honest, there will be many things
that will cause anguish but the bright side
is that there may still be time to a make amends.
There will be happy memories of children
now growing and those grown
with families of their own.
They are all gifts and we fathers
and mothers hand them to the world.
We ought to give it our best shot.
It’s seldom too late to be a good parent.”

Many of us have good intentions
but until those good intentions
take form and become active
they are less than worthless.

"Above all, keep as few good intentions
hovering about as possible.
They are like ghosts haunting a dwelling.
The way to lay them is to find bodies for them.
When they are embodied in substantial deeds
they are no longer dangerous."

“Where there is love the heart is light,
Where there is love the day is bright,
Where there is love there is a song,
To help when things are going wrong,
To make all things seem more worthwhile,
Where there is love there's quiet peace,
A tranquil place where turmoils cease...
Love change's darkness into light,
And makes the heart take "wingless flight".
Oh, blest are they who walk in love...
They also walk with God above,
And when man walks with God again,
There shall be Peace On Earth for men.”

Make a splash…
dive in head-first.

“Don't seek to be excused
if God calls you to some service.
What would the twelve disciples have lost
if they had declined the call of Jesus!
I have always pitied those other disciples
of whom we read that they went back,
and walked no more with Jesus.”
- D. L. Moody

“My dear friends,
God is not confined to any one messenger.
We are told that
He can raise up children out of stones.
Someone has said there are three classes of people,
the ‘wills,’ the ‘won'ts,’ and the ‘can'ts’;
the first accomplish everything,
the second oppose everything,
and the third fail in everything.
If God calls you, consider it a great honor.
Consider it a great privilege
to have partnership with Him in anything.
Do it cheerfully, gladly.
Do it with all your heart, and He will bless you.
Don't let false modesty or insincerity,
self-interest, or any personal consideration
turn you aside from the path of duty and sacrifice.
If we listen for God's voice, we shall hear the call;
and if he calls and sends us,
there will be no such thing as failure,
but success all along the line.”

Local mission trip to
The Bethesda Mission

Two meals were served…
one to the walk-ins and
one meal to the male residents
of the mission.

Thirty to thirty five walk-ins
including some families with children
were served in the first group
and about 50 male residents
were served in the second group.

Tasks not only included serving the food
but also set up, clean up after the meals
and sweeping.

All folks served were appreciative
and the overall experience
was very rewarding.

“…her poor will I satisfy with food.”

no secrets are hid

"Grant us, our father, your grace,
that, seeing ourselves
in the light of your holiness,
we may be cleansed of the pride
and vain glory which obscure your truth,
and knowing that from you
no secrets are hid,
we may perceive and confront
those deceits and disguises
by which we deceive
ourselves and our fellowmen.
So may we worship you
in spirit and in truth
and in your light, see light."
- Reinhold Niebuhr

“For the Word that God
speaks is alive and full of power
[making it active, operative,
energizing, and effective];
it is sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating to the dividing line of
the breath of life (soul)
and [the immortal] spirit,
and of joints and marrow
[of the deepest parts of our nature],
exposing and sifting and analyzing
and judging the very thoughts
and purposes of the heart.
And not a creature exists
that is concealed from His sight,
but all things are open and exposed…”

things we share

“People need people and friends need friends
And we all need love for a full life depends
Not on vast riches or great acclaim,
Not on success or on worldly fame,
But just in knowing that someone cares
And holds us close in their thoughts and prayers-
For only the knowledge that we're understood
Makes everyday living feel wonderfully good,
And we rob ourselves of life's greatest need
When we ‘lock up our hearts’ and fail to heed
The outstretched hand reaching to find
A kindred spirit whose heart and mind
Are lonely and longing to somehow share
Our joys and sorrows and to make us aware
That life's completeness and richness depends
On the things we share with our loved ones and friends.”

have never forsaken

Looks idyllic doesn’t it?

Both parents overlooking the safety and growth
of the little ones.

The water is calm and refreshing…
the sun is shining, and life is serene.

It isn’t always that way is it?

There come the storms of life,
whether it is emotional, physical,
relational, or financial and
no matter how hard we try
we seem lost in adversity.

Yet He calls us to face
these trials and tribulations with joy,
optimism and faith.

Not easy… no one
wishes for hard times.

These are opportunities
for spiritual growth
as we learn to trust in Him.

“God gives us a power we so seldom employ
For we’re so unaware it is filled with such joy.
And the gift that God gives us is anticipation
Which we can fulfill with sincere expectation,
For there’s power in belief when we think we will find
Joy for the heart and peace for the mind.
Just believing the day will bring a surprise
Is not only pleasant but surprisingly wise.
For we open the door to let joy walk through
When we learn to expect the best and most too
And believing we’ll find a happy surprise
Makes reality out of a fancied surmise!”

infinite joy

“If there lurks in most modern minds
the notion that to desire our own good
and to eagerly hope for
the enjoyment of it is a bad thing,
I submit that this notion...
is no part of the Christian faith.
Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises
of reward and the staggering nature
of the rewards promised in the gospels,
it would seem that our Lord finds
our desires not too strong, but too weak.
We are half-hearted creatures,
fooling about with drink and sex and ambition
when infinite joy is offered us,
like an ignorant child who wants
to go on making mud pies in a slum
because he cannot imagine
what is meant by the offer
of a holiday at the sea.
We are far too easily pleased.”
- C.S. Lewis
(The Weight of Glory)
